Dies 5th gen Combat FOILs by VulnePro Dies 5th gen Combat FOILs by VulnePro
I've been wanting to do some Theos stuff in monochrome for awhile and these two sleek new FOILs are the first of more to come.

Dies Deca-Daemos CAV FOIL & Dies Herzin-Flüg CAV FOIL

These are both 5th generation FOILs in the design evolution of these creatures. This will be the final generation of FOILs produced before Polemos is thrown into chaos due to the Siege of the Black Son event.

Both of these Dies (pronounced deese) machines are sporting covered armor on the legs and bicep/shoulders which give the machines a more slimmed look. This pair were designed for speed and dueling and thus are light CAV (cavalry) models. The Herzin-Flüg (the machine on the right) has multiple optics in it's forward faceplate and the head, though appearing to be a fixed model, actually pops out and forward for some side to side movement. Again FOILs don't require head movement due to multiple optics on the machines but often they do anyway, a vestige of their human designers anthropomorphism.

Initially done in grayscale from two blown up rough concept thumbs-

-and converted to RGB. I might end up doing some full color variants of these two in the future but for now they're getting the sepia treatment. There are some more FOILs pending so stay tuned. Oh, also should note, there is new stuff in scraps too and more pending.

Converted pencil thumb roughs to digital paints Photoshop CS3 and Painter X

Thanks, glad you dig em overall.

Aye, the feet are much an aesthetic choice as I view this project with a dash of fantasy. Giant mecha push the limits of believability regardless of how you approach them so it's best to keep that in mind. Still I try to create rules in the story and setting that allow me to get a little wilder with the look of the designs and keep them interesting.

Much better than the Invader Zim "Pilot is visible but the mech is stealthed" design.

Looks great.

Seen some episodes of Invasder Zim, they are not as good.
The quirky sense of humor is not the same.

The episodes of Frinje are much better.
They even put Inspector Denham in a bikini.

its always the face/head deisgn which appeals to me the most in your designs. abstract and alienish tiny little details in contrast to the big shapes of their bodies =) keep it up

My thanks Adam, I appreciate it :) Apologies for not getting a chance to get back to you regarding contributing, it's really been a hectic two months, which accounts for the sparse posting here. I just added you to ICQ and MSN, we can get in touch depending on preferred chat mediums soon. Best man!

Thanks Brian :) It's certainly something that doesn't come easy right away, it takes time and many years of experimenting and observation. I think what fuels my approach to the FOILs, or mecha in general is trying to find ideas in everything but mecha (though sure there are great ideas to be found in the genre to be sure). The more i looked in unusual places for shapes, aesthetics, and inspirations the more I found it far more interesting to go there. You never know what might spark an idea :)

Yeah that seems like a far better approach than my style of staring at Gundams for ever trying to figure out why I think they're cool looking. :)

Their hands look remarkably organic. 'Sup with that?

The FOILs always were organic, or bio-mechanical to be more accurate. The hands on these still have mechanical and armored components, it's just the ones pictured here are wearing gloves essentially.

OH right! I forgot about that tidbit. It'd been a long time since I'd seen any of your art.

Thanks for clearing that up.

Been cooking these type of FOILs in thumbnail form for awhile and, indeed, felt they arrived in an interesting place visually. That ornamental deco one I was working on is rather trippy too. Should have that up soon. Enjoy your trip in Arizona/Cali man :)

Nice duo, Mike! Haven't seen a lot of updates from you recently in the midst of everyone else's, so this was a good change of pace.

One small suggestion: for both FOILs, their knees look rather under-detailed compared to the rest of the bodies, and especially compared to the upper torso. Perhaps adding some additional wrinkles and/or textures to their joint covers would help balance that area out.

Thanks man :) I've been working on stuff but haven't posted, some of it is behind the scenes stuff ;) Eventually it'll show up but for now there are more FOILs on the way and other goodies.

Yeah, I agree on those knees. Actually I planned to do some tweaks on these two and just update the posting. I had a bit of a headache last night so I just threw them up here and plan to do some edits later. The legs are supposed to be somewhat smooth and featureless overall though, almost rubber-like in appearance (so some wrinkles but not the amount you might get with more conventional fabrics) but there were some areas I wanted to tighten up with the renders. Cood call :)

The coverings on the legs really change the look of your designs. Almost looks like they're wearing mecha waders.

Yeah, it certainly has a different feel but it's something I've been experimenting with behind the scenes for some time now. These things have been at war for a century or so and have gone through this five generational evolution so as they evolved they became leaner, sleeker in visual silhouette, least that's the idea :) Also I think the army's creepy Big Dog robot had some influence as well LOL
