Dies Oma-Quattro FOIL by VulnePro Dies Oma-Quattro FOIL by VulnePro
Dropping yet another new FOIL and this one in... spiffy red with kicky go faster stripes. Those of you watching this gallery should recognize this FOIL from FOIL thumbs 12

[link]

I had been dying to do a pimped out painted version of it and finally got around to doing one resulting in this, much sleeker, new version. The most obvious change is the legs, which are the same covered type as the previous two Dies FOILs posted. I never liked the legs on the original thumbnail sketch so once I settled on the slimmer look of the legs on the new version the whole thing came together very quickly and that change just made the design.

Like the Dies Deca-Daemos and the Dies Herzin-Flüg this FOIL is a 5th gen evo. Dies (pronounced deece) is a company that makes a variety of products but specializes in Shettier (some of which are peppered in the gallery), Sendai (making especially high quality Taedai) And FOILs (often approaching, or matching, the revered quality of Oshen's FOILs). Dies is a company that goes all out so Dies FOILs are as coveted as the more rare Oshen FOILs. Always distinct and always high quality Dies FOILs tend to be fierce foes as the Faedai and human operator are often some of the best and pilot these machines with a sense of bravado and pride.

Theos Ke Polemos is not Gundam but I confess the name of this one is a nod to old school Zeta Gundam's (a show that I did see when I was young and still love to this day) enigmatic character Quattro Bajeena, or more familiarly known as Char Aznabel, The Red Comet. :icongenocidalpenguin: suggested Quattro because I made the FOIL red so I just had to name it the Oma-Quattro. Here's a nod to you Old School Tomino, back when Gundam was ace.

The Dies Oma-Quattro is a design with most of the qualities I, personally, tend to gravitate toward exploring visually with the concept of the FOIL designs; an aggressive aerodynamic frame with sweeping deco/futurist lines to enhance a sense of implied movement indicating a sense of artisan driven craftsmanship. The Oma-Quattro has a rather decorative and colorful sculpt to the headcase and torso recalling the ornamental flourishes on classic art deco architecture and sculpture but again this is Polemos and done though their prism. As noted above the Oma-Quattro is one of the last of the FOILs made before the Siege of the Black Son whereupon from that point FOILs hunted to small numbers. Of all the designs I've done so far this beast is one of my favs. More to come...

Cheers!

Scary stuff @_@
Strangely it gained in realism but lost a bit in agressivity, compared to the line sketch. I find it's often the case when aplying colors. But it all depends on what you want to achieve, right ?

Aye, this is so very true, often a sketch or gesture just has something that going more refined never captures. Though regarding this one my intent with the updated version was indeed to have something more balanced with aesthetic beauty and aggressiveness. I do feel the machine still has a rather aggressive silhouette and stance but it's also verging on a sense of delicate visual beauty and decadence. I often like exploring that as a concept of implied craftsmanship and an almost veiled lethality.

it started out as a petty squabble and quickly escalated to something that threatens the very future of the planet.

Forbidden experiments in Dark energy/Matter has produced FOILs of unbridled strength and ferocity. The new dark matter enhanced, some folks say cursed has lead to some saying that the new FOILs fight with demonic powers.

The dark matter enhanced FOILs, designated Infernon were dominating the field until a breakthrough in Light energy made it possible to make FOILs capable of resisting the corrupting effects of Dark Matter and Energy.

I will stop now before I take this to Angel Vs Demon city. Have been toying with the idea of Celestial Vs Infernal mechs but this is probably not where you are going.

Looks great.

Well... without getting into details what's going on in Theos is very heavy stuff in terms of myth and supernatural. No it's not straight angels vs demons stuff but things like that are all a matter of perspective in the end anyway. What one culture calls a demon another might call a monster, and yet another might call Dad XD There is a very Lovecraftien vibe in Theos and we'll leave it at that ;) I imagine that should be evocative enough :D It's not exactly what you described but there's something in there that you'd probably find interesting for sure.

Thanks, as always, for the comments :)

Meant to say, "LOVE IT!" 3X FASTER, BITCHES!

Is that a photon matte I spy in the back? And yes, I must agree that Zeta Gundam was the high point in the UC saga. I look forward to seeing (and reading) more of the Theos world.

Great work as usual, Mike!

LOL Thanks man XD

It's not a Photon Mat, in the Tomino King gainer sense, and wasn't inspired by it, but... it hit me after developing the idea that they did something similar in Gainer. It's an Icar ring that is generated by the FOILs Icar drive and full output power. It's a hyper-dimensional antigravitic drive. Rotating torsion field that acts as the FOILs flight drive and weight adjusting balance gyro, which helps account for wilder leg designs and such.

Yup, Zeta was my fav but overall Gundam fav property side universe is Sentinel hands down. The old school stuff frankly rocked far more than the new stuff, though 00 did bring Gundam back some oomph and dignity.

Oh, I can definitely get behind Sentinel. Sentinel, Tyrant Sword of Neofalia - I was happy to see the UC side stories, but saddened because it meant the end of UC as a property that was actually going to see the screen. That said, I do look forward to Unicorn - the first UC anime in nearly twenty years that isn't a One-Year War story.

I didn't really think it was a Photon matte - you're mecha-monkey enough to know the difference, and I'm certainly monkey enough to see it. Parallel evolution works, too. I'm glad your flight effect has a backstory, as opposed to Tomino's, which just seemed to "happen." Man, what would we do without antigravity? ^_^

I like the new slimline-style legs a lot better with the chunky hip/thigh armor overlapping it. The asymmetric parts of the armor are a nice touch too. Really adds to the visual interest.

Aye, I def like this combination as well but I should note the previous two posted were kind of a stock model look, sans any customization.

What will make these continually interesting I hope is the aspect of customization tendencies of both the faedai (sendai FOIL control entity) and the human pilots. Take the stock frame and from there all kinds of stuff can be added on; armor bits, reactive plates, cages to carry packs and satchels, Ala a tank crew, etc.

I plan to post a journal soon regarding some of this stuff. Thanks for the comments man and again a big thanks for contributing that groovy FOIL illo a while back :)

Aye, very true, it's a well covered genre visually at this point. There's nothing wrong with the more familiar Gundam type of design (grew up on them so certainly dig Gundam) but I wanted to go another route. I think my approach, for awhile, has been to design the core shapes as familiar mecha silhouettes but from there look toward everything but mecha to really shape and detail them out. As I've evolved these things they've certainly slid into a signature visual style and that's what I wanted :) My thanks, I really appreciate it man :D

I do agree that's nothing wrong with sticking to gundam concept as hey it's the archetype of real robot after all, but it's kinda painful as some people actually think that as long it's gundamish then it can't be original

Yeah I agree as well, I always love to see someone doing really, really cool design work in that archetype and you have some fantastic examples in your gallery. You have a lot of fantastic work period :) There was never really anything wrong with the Gundam look as an aesthetic, it does makes sense that when you go with more hard angles and geometric shapes with bipedal armor you end up with something akin to what Gundam is. So I agree it's unfortunate people are quick to judge but ultimately, no matter how creative we get, we'll eventually but heads with designs that are already out there. In the end it's our personal spin and perspectives that make the designs we do shine and stand out :)

I love it! Just out of curiosity, though, is that red halo for technical purposes or is it for combat?

:iconvulnepro:
VulnePro Featured By Owner Nov 1, 2009  Professional Filmographer
My thanks! The halo is the FOILs Icar drive at full output, it's a hyper-dimensional antigravitic drive but that's the simple explanation, there's more to it than that. So it's the FOILs primary weight adjusting gyro and flight drive.

Well there is some truth in your observation that's kind of the point here, they're supposed to look similar. These designs are for a project with a specific sense of art direction and visual aesthetics and while you may not dig the sense of similarity, on some of these designs, it's an intentional choice on my part to keep a unified sense of aesthetics here. I'm quite capable of doing things other than this stuff but being it's one of my main projects, and I enjoy working on it, I explore this material the most. My thanks for the comments though, I do appreciate them.
