I'm glad that posted his work [link] on this gig yesterday eve because it reminded me to do the same. Planned to post these but with all the stuff that went down with my Father I simply forgot to get around to it.
These were done, in 2008, for Two Rock Media [link] intended as automotive wraps for Scion's Xb model compact cars. Initially we were given files for the 2008 model then later it was upgraded to the newer 2009 model (which was a pain to adapt the designs due to the wheel wells not lining up) so this is why I'm posting the 2008 Xb and Nick posted the 2009 Xb.
I was initially approached by Two Rock for this gig, along with other folks on DA, due to my work on Theos of all things. I brought in later because it was rather interesting as things developed. As Nick noted in his Sprint Strider post I came up with the idea of the Sprint Striders as little mecha racers we could do as our own studio theme. In fact we were the only two illustrators (seeing as we were working as a studio), out of the various other artists pulled in from DA, doing that. was also going to come on but...
unfortunately the 2008 wall street econopocalypse went down before things could really get to speed and the gig died right there... everyone stopped buying cars. DOH! It's a shame too as the company had all the ducks lined up, dealers ready to buy, etc. They were really nice folks and really had everything set to go with a major launch in cali, then across the US. Events as big as the 2008 wall street collapse are beyond anyone's control though. No money to loan for people to buy cars and that was that. Last I heard they planned to try to revive the project and if this happens they'll let us know.
With the rights reverting back to the artists though I can see these little tricked out iridescent painted racing bots (actually TKP sendai in joke meant to promote the studio) making some form of return to the Vulne pro fold as to the design concepts. All said it was a fun gig, too bad it went blewy.
At least it had nothing to w/ the client being unsatisfied. And the relationship is still good... AND we get to see the stuff! Best case scenario for a job that goes south, I suppose.
