TAEDUS Divinus head shots by VulnePro TAEDUS Divinus head shots by VulnePro
There's a bunch of stuff coming and this collection of head shots will kick things off.

Here we have some detail shots of Divinus Tessko's unique head design. Divinus is one of the principal characters in the Whisper's of the Deep TKP project we have cooking in the studio's easy bake oven right now. To see a full body shot of Divinus you can see that here:

The aesthetic style of this guy's head is actually a nod to my old style of drawing taedus designs from the early 90s. I have one of those older designs in the gallery now (a design which will be getting some updates but remaining mostly intact visually) and can be seen here:

So I wanted to bring some of that original styling that I came up with into this newer material. Afterall it's the aesthetic that started it all for the Theos work and I still like a lot of what we did back in the early 90s (well enough to work with). In many ways it's an old school look wed with some modernistic sensibilities.

More Whisper's work to come...

Digitally inked pencils with gray scale tones in CS3.

How do you start off drawing/sketching your bots?

Pretty much ALL my designs begin as small thumbnail roughs. I always rough the stuff out as small thumbs because it forces you to focus on form and silhouette rather than detail. I've been doing this stuff for so long though that I can usually even rough out the base details in my thumbs but the exercise is the same, still focus on form.

Oh that's interesting.
I'm practicing, well trying to get a good start on how to make bots and cyborgs and such.
I've been using standard size printing paper when i do my sketches and make circles and squares, whatever the shape I wanted the bot to be.
That hasn't really been working out too well.
So starting just a bit smaller would that help?

Very cool & stylish, Mike. Love the forward pronounced brow and the lower 'snout'. For me, reminiscent of a Goblin shark: [link]
Also dig the position of that mandible eyeball. Especially the queer look he's giving in the left middle view. Great angle.
The 'noir' high contrast treatment at bottom is striking as well.

My thanks Rob :) The design was something more focused on character in the face so all the impressions people have been getting are good. The Whispers of the Deep project will be all black & white so it will be a flat out film noir Theos project. You'll be seeing a lot more of this stuff ;)

My thanks, I appreciate it! He's a bit thinner on that front-on shit than he should be but, otherwise he is, indeed, supposed to have an almost blade-like head.

I know it's a head design but this would also be a awesome ship design - something like a drone. :) Great work as always Mike.

Yeah it's a weird configuration of shapes, which is what I like about doing stuff like this, indeed could be a ship in another life. My thanks Travis :) Keep rockin' the cool works yourself man and please tell Lincoln and Yokoyama-san I said hello! It's been some time since we last chatted.

Best!

Is it me, or does Divinus's expression on the left seem to give off that "what-the-hell" :iconwthplz: vibe? I love it!

Yeah. I like this a lot. Seems a little overly narrow, but still a really solid design.

My thanks, glad you dig it :) Yeah, its supposed to be a narrow blade-like head but that slight head-on view I ended up making a bit narrower than it's supposed to be. I kept all the Whispers stuff straight up hand drawn digital ink (no line tool, ellipsis, etc... so far) so I didn't mind some imperfections. Still, I'll probably bulk that up a bit as this character appears more ;)

Thanks again!

No problem, ask questions anytime :)

For now, the best place to learn about the project is here, our site/blog, twitter, and tumblr accounts. I hope to be rolling out more and more info as we edge into 2012.

Is there anywhere some story? I mean everywhere I can find just pieces, nothing really informative.

No, as yet the full story isn't available online and likely won't be for some time, it was intended as a full animated TV series arc (naturally to maintain the integrity of twists and turns, etc). I've been involved in animation pitches over the years but when the economy took a dive things simply went into a holding pattern for the primary game plan. That said, we are planning to explore smaller narratives in the universe and hope to get some of that material out sometime in the future (so, yes there will be some story stuff coming at some point. No concrete announcements until we're ready). It's always wise to remain flexible.
